Classes We Offer
Modern
We are often asked, what is modern? The simple answer is that it is a combination ofballet and jazz put together. Modern originally was performed to percussive instruments such as bongo drums, but has evolved to include a variety of different music styles.Modern is done in bare feet and is a very “earthy” or grounded dance discipline that works from the core of the body. The core initiates most of the movements, making it a very cleansing dance form that forces the students to understand what breathing does to the quality of movement. Our modern programme is open to students four years and older. We offer exams in modern through the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
Acro
Acro is a combination of gymnastics and dance. Acro develops the dancers strength, flexibility and balance.
Lyrical
Lyrical is a dance discipline that is based on a combination of ballet, jazz and modern. Lyrical is the ability to tell the story of a song or theme through movement. Lyrical is only offered as a separate dance form in our competition programme. Modern would be the closest genre to lyrical.
Musical Theatre
Musical theatre is a combination of singing, acting and dancing. The programme allows students to explore their dramatic side while building self-esteem and confidence. Through drama games, and activities students will be encouraged to express themselves. Students will develop their performance, improvisation skills and story-telling abilities. Our Musical theatre programme is open to students who are six years and older.
Jazz
Our jazz programme offers students a more intense work-out with a faster paced class. Jazz requires the students to use strength, flexibility, technique, control and coordination all done to the latest music chart hits. Jazz is a very popular style of dance that caters to everyones likes. Our jazz programme is open to any student who is five years of age or older. We offer exams through the Canadian Dance Teachers Association for jazz.
Hip Hop
Hip hop has become increasingly popular in the past ten years. Hip hop is a form of street jazz which incorporates some break dancing and locking. This dance form is enjoyed by everyone. Our hip hop classes are open to students seven years and older.
Tap
Tap is a great form of dance which encourages the students to use their feet to “make music”. Whether it is with music or without, tap makes the students listen to the sounds they are making, which in turn helps with their musicality, rhythm and understanding and appreciation of music. Our tap programme offer students from the age of four an opportunity to dance to broadway style or the latest street style tap. We offer tap exams through the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.
Ballet
Our ballet programme is based on the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus in which we offer exams from the age of five. We accept students into our pre-school ballet programme at the age of three. Ballet encourages pose, self discipline, and grace as well as strength, technique and flexibility. Ballet is the basis of all dance disciplines and we strongly recommend all of our students to take it. Ballet is mandatory for our competition team.
